Author Biography
K. Balaveera Reddy Obtained his postgraduation from IIT, Kharagpur, in machine design and doctorate from IIT, Madras. Later he proved his worth as an ideal teacher in Karnataka Regional Engineering College (NITK), Surathkal. He has maintained record of accomplishments in the research fields such as design of machine elements, reliability and machinery diagnostics, torsional vibrations, and gears and gear shafts. He was Director, Department of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka, Bengaluru, and Vice-Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka, Belgaum.

Machine Design is one of the basic subjects of Mechanical Engineering and a thorough knowledge of the design aspects of machine elements is essential for both engineering students and practising engineers. Working out the design of a machine as a whole, or its components, usually involves the use of several formulae, equations and other relevant data and the availability of all such information in one single handbook will not only remove the unnecessary task of remembering the required formulae and equations but will also aid the students and practising engineers to solve the problems in Machine Design in quicker time.
This Design Data Hand Book has been prepared keeping the above views in mind. The Data compiled in this Hand Book have been presented in SI (System International) Units since the adoption of SI Units has already been accepted in our country. It may be mentioned that several other countries have been using the SI Units for science and engineering subjects in recent years. The symbols used in the handbook are also those pertaining to SI Units. As far as possible, data available in ISI Standards have been used, at the appropriate places, after converting the information to SI Units. Reference has been made to several standard text-books on machine design while compiling the data for the handbook and a list of references is included at the end of each chapter so that the readers can refer to the relevant books for obtaining further information on the topic.
Care has been taken to include data on almost all the important topics embracing machine design and it is thus hoped that the handbook will be quite useful to the engineering students of all the Universities in our Country. Further, necessary conversion factors and tables have also been presented in Appendix V, so that design problems can be solved even when the data given are in FPS or Metric units.
