Author Biography
SP Gupta PhD (Civil Engineering)
is former Director, Global Institute of Technology, Jaipur (2012), after serving as Principal of the institute for 9 years. He retired from Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, as Professor and Head, Department of Structural Engineering, in 2002. Dr Gupta graduated in Civil Engineering in 1965 from Delhi College of Engineering. He obtained his postgraduate degree in structural engineering from Delhi University in 1970, and doctoral degree from University of Rajasthan in 1985. He started his career as Assistant Engineer in UP Irrigation in 1965. Thereafter, he switched over to teaching at Delhi College of Engineering in 1967 and then at Malaviya Regional Engineering College (now Malaviya National Institute of Technology), Jaipur, in 1969. He became Reader and Professor in 1985 and 1996. Dr Gupta has published more than 25 research papers. He has co- authored books Structural Analysis: A Matrix Approach, Theory of Structures (2 volumes), Torsion in Concrete Structures and Prestressed Concrete CBS. Dr Gupta has been Chairman, Academic Affairs Committee, and Professor Incharge, Admissions/ Examinations. He also served as a Member of Board of Governors.

WE feel immense pleasure in presenting the fifth edition of the book in the hands of young civil engineers preparing for various competitive examinations. This edition has been thoroughly revised and enlarged covering syllabi of most competitive examinations like Engineering Services Examination, GATE, PSUs, state PSCs, etc. and by including important questions that appeared in the competitive examinations up to 2025 in Engineering Services Examination conducted by UPSC and also from GATE conducted by IIT. The book was highly appreciated by the readers from all nooks and corners of the country. A large number of questions from the book appeared in the com- petitive examinations as well. The main feature of the book is its conciseness coverage of the entire syllabus in a fewer questions and Appendix B, giving explanation to the correctness of a particular answer for some typical questions. Due to changes in the specifications and codal provisions over the years, new/updated questions have been included based on latest codes of reinforced concrete (IS:456-2000), prestressed concrete (IS:1343-2012), steel structures (IS:800-2007), wind loads (IS:875: Part 3: 2015), air quality (NAAQS 2009), drinking water specification (IS:10500-2012), other latest codes and specifications. With the addition of about 200 new questions, the new edition now contains about 5400 questions. The entire book has been set on the computer thus making the reading a pleasure because of clarity in printing and figures.
